2022 House Bill 6425

Permit colleges to ‘support’ athletes’ commercial and endorsement deals

Introduced in the House

Sept. 28, 2022

Introduced by Rep. Joe Tate (D-2)

To permit colleges that participate in inter-collegiate athletic competitions to “support student athletes' name, image, or likeness opportunities by partnering with third parties that license publicity rights or the use of name, image, or likeness rights,” subject to specified conditions and requirements. This amends a law that explicitly states colleges are not required to “identify, create, facilitate, negotiate, or otherwise enable opportunities for a student to earn compensation for the student's use of his or her name, image, or likeness rights,” a provision the bill does not change.
