To authorize granting rewards to individuals who report that a gas station is violating the state consumer protection act’s prohibition on “charging the consumer a price that is grossly in excess of the price at which similar property or services are sold.” The bill would authorize lawsuits by the Attorney General, and additional civil fines of up to $1,500, or $3,000 for subsequent motor fuel price offenses that are “persistent and knowing.” Up to 50 percent of these fines could be distributed as rewards under rules and procedures specified by the bill, and the Attorney General would be required to publicize the availability of such rewards.   Official Text and Analysis.
