2021 Senate Bill 29

Authorize more school spending in current fiscal year

Introduced in the Senate

Jan. 13, 2021

Introduced by Sen. Jim Stamas (R-36)

To provide a template or "place holder" for a potential supplemental school aid appropriation for Fiscal Year 2020-2021. This bill contains no appropriations, but may be amended at a later date to include real ones.

Referred to the Committee on Appropriations

Feb. 25, 2021

Reported without amendment

With the recommendation that the substitute (S-3) be adopted and that the bill then pass.

Amendment offered by Sen. Rosemary Bayer (D-12)

To appropriate most of the federal relief dollars approved for Michigan schools now, which is $1.656 billion, rather than $832 million now and the rest later in the year.

The amendment failed 15 to 20 (details)

Passed in the Senate 20 to 15 (details)

To appropriate an additional $1.246 billion for Michigan's public school system in the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Of this $932 million is federal money and $313 million comes from state taxpayers. A total of $807 million would be allocated to school districts based on the number of children from lower income households they enroll. Another $90 million would go to K-8 summer school programs and $45.0 million for high school credit recovery programs, with smaller amounts for other purposes.
