2022 House Bill 6242

Ban landlord asking if prospective tenant has criminal record

Introduced in the House

June 16, 2022

Introduced by Rep. Abraham Aiyash (D-4)

To prohibit landlords from asking prospective tenants if they have a criminal record and what for, unless this is required by state or federal laws. The bill would also ban asking for copies of “background checks” performed by police or private tenant screening services, or running “for rent” ads that state tenants with a record are disallowed. Landlords could still ask if an applicant is on a state sex offender registry (which is also public information).
