2020 House Bill 5616

Impose mental and physical health “parity” mandates in welfare and private insurance

Introduced in the House

March 12, 2020

Introduced by Rep. Phil Green (R-84)

To revise the mental health code to specify criteria for when community mental health services programs may offer alternative outpatient treatment services. These programs are mostly run by counties and are considered the front line of Michigan’s mental health services system under state laws and rules. The bill would also specify that if an individual refuses hospitalization or other treatment recommended by a preadmission screening unit, the provider must file a petition with the court alleging that the individual is a person requiring treatment, which means a court can order this.
