2017 House Bill 4981

Mandate school lighting standards and more

Introduced in the House

Sept. 19, 2017

Introduced by Rep. Robert Wittenberg (D-27)

To mandate that new schools and large school renovations must meet “sustainable” lighting standards as specified in the bill. The bill goes beyond energy efficiency standards, and would require that schools adhere to “daylight and quality view” standards that “connect building occupants with the outdoors, reinforce circadian rhythms,” and introduce “daylight and views into the space;” impose “light pollution reduction standards intended to increase night sky access, improve nighttime visibility, and reduce daylight and quality views;” and much more.
